SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Academy of PAs (IAPA) commends State Senator Javier Loera Cervantes for his leadership in introducing Senate Bill 271, a critical step toward expanding access to care and strengthening Illinois’ health care workforce. The bill, which was the subject of a hearing this week in the Senate Licensed Activities Committee, seeks to modernize the physician assistant (PA) licensing process and reduce unnecessary barriers to practice for experienced PAs.
“Senator Cervantes understands that Illinoisans are waiting too long for care—and that our state must act now to address provider shortages,” said Hazel Domingo, President of the Illinois Academy of PAs. “We are grateful for his leadership on SB271 and his commitment to ensuring that qualified, experienced PAs can deliver the high-quality, team-based care patients deserve.”
SB271 would permit PAs with more than 2,000 hours of clinical experience to practice without a supervising physician, aligning Illinois with national best practices while maintaining high standards for patient safety. The bill is especially important for improving access in underserved communities, including neighborhoods on Chicago’s south and southwest sides.
“By cutting red tape and modernizing outdated licensing processes, this bill will ensure more providers can practice in the communities that need them most,” added Domnigo. “It’s a common-sense, patient-centered solution that supports Illinois’ entire health care system.”
IAPA extends its sincere thanks to Senator Cervantes and the members of the Senate Licensed Activities Committee for their thoughtful engagement and support. IAPA remains committed to working alongside lawmakers, health care organizations, and community leaders to advance policies that expand access and improve care for all Illinois residents.
