Legislative Update: Historic Progress for PA Practice in Illinois
Dear IAPA Members,
As we conclude the spring legislative session, I want to provide an update on the Illinois Academy of PAs' ongoing legislative efforts to modernize PA practice in Illinois and advance our profession.
First and foremost, I would like to recognize the extraordinary work and dedication demonstrated by our leadership team, Legislative Committee members, advocacy volunteers, and staff throughout this process. Countless hours have been devoted to stakeholder meetings, legislative strategy discussions, drafting and refining bill language, member outreach, and direct engagement with lawmakers. Their commitment to advancing the PA profession and improving access to patient care across Illinois has been remarkable.
We also extend our sincere gratitude to Senator Javier Cervantes, who has been a steadfast champion of this legislation. His leadership, partnership, and commitment to working through complex policy issues have been instrumental in moving this effort forward.
This year marked a significant milestone for our profession. For the first time ever, our legislation successfully advanced out of the Senate Licensed Activities Committee. This achievement represents meaningful progress and reflects years of advocacy, relationship-building, and collaboration with legislators and stakeholders throughout Illinois.
While we had hoped to secure an additional hearing before the conclusion of the spring session, the bill was ultimately not called for further consideration before adjournment. Although this outcome is understandably disappointing, it should not overshadow the substantial progress that has been made.
Importantly, through extensive negotiations and collaboration, all key stakeholders have reached agreement on the latest amendment language. This consensus represents a major accomplishment and provides a strong foundation for future legislative action.
The Illinois Academy of PAs is actively working with Senator Cervantes, key stakeholder groups, and the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) to develop the most effective path forward. Together, we are evaluating opportunities to continue advancing this legislation during sessions later this year and, if necessary, into the next legislative session.
Legislative progress often requires persistence, patience, and sustained advocacy. The advances achieved this year demonstrate that our collective efforts are making a difference. We have strengthened relationships, built broader support for our profession, achieved historic committee advancement, and established stakeholder consensus on critical policy provisions.
While our work is not yet complete, we are better positioned than ever to continue moving this legislation forward. We remain committed to pursuing policies that allow PAs to practice to the fullest extent of their education, training, and experience while expanding access to high-quality healthcare for patients throughout Illinois.
Thank you for your continued support, engagement, and advocacy on behalf of our profession. We look forward to keeping you informed as these efforts continue.
